3 Signs your food reactions may have a deeper source
If you keep removing foods because you react to almost everything, the food may not be the whole problem.
This is one of the biggest things people miss when they are dealing with food sensitivities, digestive issues, bloating, brain fog, fatigue, or feeling worse after eating.
You find one food that seems to cause symptoms, so you remove it.
Then another food causes a reaction.
So you remove that one too.
Pretty soon, your list of “safe foods” gets smaller and smaller, and eating becomes stressful.
Sometimes food absolutely matters. The foods and ingredients you eat can contribute to inflammation and can keep your body stuck.
But there is another question we need to ask:
Why is your body reacting to so many foods in the first place?
That is where I look deeper.
Sign #1: Your list of “safe foods” keeps getting smaller
If you started with one or two foods that bothered you and now you feel like you react to almost everything, I would not automatically assume that your body suddenly became intolerant to every food on your plate.
There may be something underneath the reactivity.
I look at this through the 5 Layers to Illness.
The first layer is a toxic burden. Over time, the body can become overwhelmed by things it encounters in everyday life. That can contribute to inflammation and interfere with normal immune function.
Then comes digestion.
If your body isn't properly breaking down, absorbing, and using your food, eating the “perfect” diet doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
Then comes an inflamed immune response.
This is where people can start feeling reactive to foods they previously tolerated.
The answer isn't necessarily to keep removing more and more foods forever.
The bigger question is:
What is keeping your body in this reactive state?
Sign #2: You react differently depending on the day
This is a huge clue.
Maybe you eat something one day and feel fine.
The next time you eat the exact same thing, you feel bloated, exhausted, foggy, or uncomfortable.
Then it happens again.
Better.
Worse.
Better.
Worse.
This can be incredibly frustrating because you start questioning everything.
“Was it the food?”
“Was it the amount?”
“Was it something I ate earlier?”
“Why did I feel fine yesterday?”
This is where blocking and switching and nervous system interference become important pieces of the conversation.
Your nervous system is involved in how your body communicates and responds. When there is interference, your body may not respond consistently to the things you're doing to support it.
That can leave people constantly changing foods, supplements, and protocols because nothing seems to work consistently.
And that is exactly how people stay stuck.
They keep changing the outside without finding what is interfering underneath.
Sign #3: You have changed your diet over and over, but the symptoms keep coming back
Maybe you've tried elimination diets.
You've removed gluten.
You've removed dairy.
You've removed sugar.
You've tried eating organic.
You've bought supplements.
You've followed food rules.
You may even have gotten better for a while.
Then the symptoms came back.
This doesn't automatically mean you failed.
It may mean you addressed one piece without addressing the layers underneath it.
At Treat the Source, I look at the entire picture.
That includes toxic burden, digestion, inflammation, hidden sources, immune function, nervous system interference, and whether blocking or switching is preventing the body from responding properly.
Because food is only one part of the story.
So what could actually be keeping you reactive?
It could be that your body is overwhelmed.
It could be that digestion isn't working properly, so you aren't breaking down and using your food the way you should.
It could be inflammation creating an ongoing reactive state.
There can also be hidden sources of interference that keep the cycle going.
And if your nervous system is blocked or switched, you can keep trying the “right” things without getting the response you expect.
This is why I don't believe the answer is always another elimination diet.
Sometimes the answer is finding out why your body can't tolerate what you're giving it.
The goal isn't to be afraid of food
I don't want people living their lives terrified of their next meal.
The goal is to understand what is happening underneath the reaction.
Food can absolutely be part of the solution. The right foods can help reduce inflammation, support digestion, and give the body what it needs during the repair process.
But if there is still interference in the system, you can keep chasing food triggers forever.
This is why our approach follows the layers.
In Immune Restore, we focus on reducing the overwhelm, supporting digestion, addressing toxic burden and hidden sources, and removing interference so the body can begin responding.
Then, in Repair & Rebuild, we work on the deeper reasons the body became stuck so it can begin functioning more efficiently with less support.
The goal is eventually Maintenance — where your body is doing more of what it was designed to do instead of needing endless intervention.
What to do if you react to everything
Start paying attention to your patterns instead of only making your food list smaller.
Notice what you ate.
Notice what happened afterward.
Notice whether the reaction is consistent or changes from day to day.
Notice your digestion, energy, brain fog, sleep, and other symptoms.
And most importantly, ask a different question.
Instead of:
“What food is causing this?”
Ask:
“What is keeping my body from responding properly to food?”
That question takes you deeper.
Because sometimes the food isn't the entire problem.
Sometimes the food is simply revealing that something underneath needs attention.
Your symptoms are information. They are clues that something isn't working the way it should.
The goal isn't to keep taking things away.
The goal is to remove the interference that is keeping your body stuck so it can respond, regulate, digest, absorb, and protect itself the way it was designed to.
That's how we stop chasing the symptom and start treating the source.
